On June 30th and July 1st 2018, the first European Invitational BBQ Championship sanctioned by KCBS and dedicated to the BBQ American style is back to Italy, hosted at the Bonaventura Maschio Distillery at its historical facilities in Gaiarine Treviso, Italy. Eighteen top teams from all over Europe will gather in Veneto to take part in the “Prime Uve Invitational Barbecue Championship”, a true US-style competition. Access is by invitation only.
At Prime Uve the teams will have to prove their worth in six categories.
Next to the four classics KCBS, Chicken, Ribs, Pork and Brisket, are two extra inspired by Prime Uve’s grape distillates (Prime Uve Bianche, Nere and Oro).
CHICKEN, white and dark chicken meat.
RIBS, smoked pork ribs served in Kansas City style, smoked and glazed with barbecue sauce, or in Memphis style, i.e. with a dry spice rub.
PORK, this preparation is usually made with Boston Butt, a pork cut that includes a part of the shoulder and the neck.
BRISKET, Beef brisket cooked and smoked in one piece.
BARREL SMOKE, every team decides their own entry, but it is mandatory to smoke the preparation with the chunks of barrels used for the ageing of a Prime Uve distillate. SAUCE, a sauce prepared using Prime Uve distillate. Since the American way of cooking is based on long time cooking, the challenge will continue overnight between Saturday and Sunday. This year the teams are challenged to confront a new special category: BBQ AND COCKTAIL PAIRING. On Saturday, June 30th, the teams who decide to apply will present one BBQ plate combined with one cocktail prepared with Prime Uve Bianche, Nere or Oro, to a jury of experts. The jury will evaluate the pairing and will assign a “Special Prize” to the best team.
18 teams altogether are participating at the “Prime Uve Invitational Barbecue Championship”. 15 are the top European Teams according to the KCBS ITOY EUROPE 2017 official ranking. In addition, there will be 3 teams, selected through a draw among all teams that competed in one of the previous editions of the Prime Uve Invitational Barbecue Championship, who did not qualify for the fourth.
Miss Piggy’s a husband and wife barbecue team and catering based in Leicester, UK. Scott and Lyndsey have been competing in BBQ for 8 years. Twice EBCC European Champions, they’re the first team to achieve Grand Champion in 5 different countries in the same year. Best european team at Jack Daniel’s Invitational 2012. Only european team ever featured on the famous US tv show BBQ Pitmasters. They compete in UK, Europe, USA and everywhere else you can burn some wood.

Bohemian BBQ is a family team from Prague and consists of Kansas boy Clint & Czech girl Eva and their little boys Kubi and Willi. They have a great time traveling and competing in many countries with their BBQ friends and showcasing Yoder Smokers, which they represent in Europe. 2017 was a great year, with a Grand Championship, several category wins, and many top 10 finishes. They are thrilled to be back at Prime Uve for the second year in a row.
Bunch of Swines are the 2017 KCBS European Team of the year. Based in the UK and made up of a couple, Ed and Emma. They started competing back in 2011 and are now a regular on the European BBQ Circuit. Over the years they won some of the largest European contests, and received awards at some major invitational BBQ events in the USA too. This year European BBQ circuit again!
Team founded by Angelo, Andrea and Philip in 2015 in Brianza (hence the name). The BrigBoys win the Italian BBQ Championship in 2016 and represent Italy at the Jack Daniel’s World Championship in the USA. 2017 is the confirmation of the potential of the team that again wins the IBC, wins in Slovenia and takes 2nd place at the prestigious Brew’n’Q in England. 1st place in the “Pork” category at the Prime Uve Invitational Championship 2017.
Southern Dutch BBQ is a competition BBQ team from Breda, the Netherlands. Started out as a backyard cook soon became a passion. Southern Dutch BBQ competed in more than 35 contests all over Europe and the US in the past for 5 years. We see it as a professional sport, and we love what we do. Since 2014 Southern Dutch BBQ is competing in KCBS BBQ contest all over Europe. Next to be the winner of Ruhrpott 2015 and W.E.S.T. 2016 they have a lot of top 10 finishes.
Dragon BBQ is competing in KCBS contests since 2014. Reserved Grand Champion Ruhrpott 2016. Michael and Stefanie are the organizers of the Black Forest Smoke & Wine Festival. Beside BBQ contests they do caterings and BBQ workshops as well as workshops for Asian Wok Cooking as Michael is the founder of the “Roaring Dragon”, the most powerful gas burner for asian cuisine.
iQ is the Dutch National Team of the Year, Grand Champion (2015, 2016 and 2017) as well as Dutch Champion overall in several individual categories. We earned the inaugural 2016 KCBS International Team of the Year overall Grand Champion, and KCBS International TOY Brisket Champion 2016. For 2017 we are the KCBS International Team of the Year for the categories Chicken, Pork Ribs and Pork.
BBQ Longhorn Ranch Hands is an Austrian BBQ team. The members run the BBQ restaurant “Longhorn” in Dornbirn. Thanks to BBQ Championships they have turned their work into their hobby. In 2017 they took part in 21 competitions across Europe.
De Filous from Belgium: the team is made up of Wim and Dimitri. Sometimes they get help from their friend Steven. They’ve been “competing” since 2012, but started doing KCBS competitions in 2014. They always arrive late at competitions and love Gin&Tonic!
Young team born in 2016, four friends madly passionate about BBQ and cooking in general. We love BBQ competitions and their spirit of friendship.
We have now gone from a 4 man team to a 1 man team competing, in only our 2nd year in KCBS. We love sharing our bbq passion with other teams, eating good food and drinking well!
PureBBQ is a team of friends who met in BBQ in 2012. We compete all over Europe and even to the US (Jack Daniels Invitational) and North Africa /World Championships). We are proud to be back at the Prime Uve for the fourth time.
Rokende Regahs is a BBQ team from the Netherlands. We are four friends that started a few years ago just for fun. After having done more than 50 KCBS competitions we are very pleased to be back at Prime Uve for the third time. To come again and BBQ in the sun at the beautiful distillery is the highlight of the summer for us!
Team motto: We’re going for flavor – never mind our behavior – let’s meat and greet. Our accomplishments: 1st Ribs Belgium 2017; 3rd overall West 2017; 1st Brisket West 2017; 1st Chicken West 2017; 3rd overall Vaarste Hoeve 2017; 2nd place Brisket Ruhrpott.
We finished 2017 as vice champions of Europe, we are the Italian team with more races behind us, with more titles on the bulletin board, the Italian team to have obtained the best result in the United States (21st place in a KCBS category at the American Royal 2016 “invitational”), the only Italian team (together with only 3 other European teams) to have entered the exclusive 700+ club of KCBS.
LetzQ is a Dutch BBQ team, consisting of Peter and Marjan (husband and wife), founded in 2014. In that year we became European Champion Brisket and had a perfect perfect score on brisket. But we have won many more prices. If you want to see them, visit our restroom and take a look 😉 In the past years we have been competing through whole Europe. To share our passion and taste we have launched our own line with LetzQ rubs and every year we organize BBQ trips to some great European locations. Our love for BBQ is so big that we have sold our own company and now Peter is working for Big Green Egg Netherlands so that he can BBQ every day.
White Squirrel began as husband and wife team Peter and Lili Flynn. The team was founded out of a love for BBQ and the enjoyment of competing. The main focus of White Squirrel BBQ is to promote undiluted American Style BBQ in Europe. The team is multi national as Peter is American and Lili comes from Germany. The team is located in Ingolstadt Germany and enjoys spreading the BBQ gospel throughout Bavaria. 2016 was the first year competing and White Squirrel was able to reach a top ten ITOY ranking with KCBS. In 2017 a baby squirrel has arrived, so the team has expanded to include Simon Nusser as an alternate when Lili needs a break.
The contest is sanctioned by KCBS, a non profit organization dedicated to the promotion of barbecue competitions in the world. At the competition in Gaiarine, twenty-four certified KCBS judges, chosen because of their expertise and experience and coordinated by four Table Captains, will blind-taste the preparations and will vote on appearance, taste and tenderness. A jury of food and wine experts who will express their preference by awarding a special prize will judge the “BBQ and Cocktail Pairing” category.
